WELCOME TO THE 2008 RACE SEASON!
There are several sure signs of spring throughout the Chicagoland area, the chirping of birds, the blooming of grass and trees, the smell of fresh white paint and the cheers of a crowd and the sounds of high-octane racing at Sycamore Speedway. That’s right, the 2008 season is under way, and if the racing Saturday night was any indication, it’s going to be an exciting season! Plenty of new cars and drivers were on hand, and the fans were anxious to see the season get started.
And start it did, with drivers eager to score the first point of the season in the Trophy Dashes. Winning in the Super Late Model division was the #28 of Charlie Olson, and winning in Late Model was the #95 of Paul “PJ” Ermel. Both races were very fast charges to the checkers we’ve become accustomed to out there.
Heat Race victories for the Supers went to the #19 of Reno Markham (has there ever been a year without a Markham racing at Sycamore?) and the #21 of Bill Perkins, who has mastered the art of the restart. The Semi-Feature victory went to Dan “The Human Sheepdog” White, although I guess I have to come up with a new nickname for him after his recent shearing! Looking over the entry list for this year, I noticed there are some new drivers and some from the past returning, that should make for an interesting season.
Moving along to Late Model, these guys seem to be in mid-season form already! Winning Heat Races were the #133 of Tom Campion, the #85 of Robert Solorio and the #1 of Dave Radloff. The Semi victory went to the #62 of Dan Williams, those glowing eyes on the roof of his car must have helped him see the way!
For the Features, the Super Late Model race was won by Bill Perkins who doubled up for the night, Chargin’ Charlie Olson was second and Gary Koehring was third. Their feature was fun to watch, let’s see if these drivers can keep up this great level of racing all season long! For the Late Models, it was Birthday Boy #113 Nick Worman in the “Flying Furnace” taking home the victory, winning another great race, holding off the field for the victory. He also got a little too excited doing a victory doughnut/burnout and snapped an axle! I guess that’s the time to have one let loose, right? As a side note, Nick brought his car out to the track in the back of a dump truck; let’s see what he uses next week! Finishing second was #1 Dave Radloff and third was the #22 of Mike Crowe.
Our Powder Puff Class, those Lovely Ladies of Racing also did battle, and winning the Heat Race was the 66X of Megan Decker, who also doubled up and took the victory in the feature as well. Two in one night against a tough field, that’s quite an accomplishment! Time will tell if she can do it again.
Our Spectator Division saw Heat Race victories by the #29 of Courtney Brancecum, the #43T of Steve Goll and the #74X Chris Ricker. Feature winners were the #29 of Courtney Brancecum, winning TWICE that night), the #60 of Flyin’ Brian Clarke and the #74X of Chris Ricker, also doubling up for the night. The driver of the #21T, Corey Marshall asked hid girlfriend to Prom Sycamore Style. He had a sign on his roof that read “Prom Megan?” Stay tuned race fans to see what Megan said.
Our Compact Combat Division also did battle, and winning Heat Races for the Big Stars in the Little Cars was the #69X of Dan Sigler and the #0 of Rick Zifko. Winning the Feature was the “Zero Hero” of Rick Zifko. Finishing second was the #6 of Bob Barkes (see Bob, I got it right!!!), and third was the #2X of Anthony Hansford. There was a big field in the feature and we fully expected to see at least one of these cars on its lid, but surprisingly it didn’t.
Overall, a good start to the season; don’t worry folks, it WILL get warmer, I promise, and things will get even HOTTER on the track. There will be all sorts of surprises throughout the season—monster trucks, vintage car racing and a whole lot more!! See ya at the track!
Illinois Vintage Racing returns to Sycamore Speedway 2008
We are proud to announce that The Illinois Vintage Racing Series will return to Sycamore Speedway for 3 events on the big track this year. Our Season opener is May 10th followed by June 7th and July 26th. Once again our fans will take a trip down memory lane. This Racing Series considers Sycamore Speedway to be our home track, therefore, we will be racing here more times than any other track on our schedule.
The Arnie Gardner Memorial Award will once again be awarded to a well deserving recipient June 7th. Our program will consist of a 6 lap Trophy Dash, Heat Race and then a Feature. Our Cars will again be on display behind the Grandstands and our drivers will be available to the fans throughout the night to answer questions and sign autographs.
Our latest addition to our Club is a **** Trickle replica built by Bills Speed Shop. It was lettered live at the World of Wheels event at McCormack Place in January.
